Understanding, Planning and Implementation

  • Assisting families in understanding special education terms and procedures
  • Assisting families in understanding the RTI process, the case study process or the private evaluation process
  • Assisting families in understanding the child’s disability, strengths and areas we can work on together
  • Reviewing your student’s school special education paperwork and/or reports
  • Assisting in the development of IEP goals and specific modifications and accommodations needed by a particular student
  • Preparing families for IEP meetings, transition meetings, etc.
  • Attending IEP meetings, transition meetings, annual reviews, etc. at school
  • Assisting in the development of transition plans for students moving from one program or school to another
  • Providing short-term transition support by modeling, coaching and mentoring the staff at the new program or school along with making visuals, gathering specific materials, etc.
  • Providing on-going short-term training for program assistants and/or teachers
  • Attending mediation meetings
  • Presenting on various topics including specific disabilities, inclusion, collaboration, etc.

Observations and Suggestions

  • Observing students at home or at school (observations will include what’s working, what isn’t and my ideas)
  • Observing programs (observations include the pros and cons to this particular setting for a specific student)

Behavior Management

  • Assisting in the development of positive behavior plans
  • Assisting families with behavior strategies that can be used at home
  • Modeling and implementing behavior strategies that we agreed upon

Tutoring

  • Providing individualized tutoring in reading, writing, math and/or executive functioning skills in your home or at the library
